What’s the greatest thing in the world?
Is it faith? No.
Is it hope? Nope.
In 1 Corinthians 13:13, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.” While faith and hope are significant, love surpasses them in importance.
Love is the greatest thing in the world because it is the ultimate motivation. Scripture reveals this truth in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (NIV). It was love that moved God to act—to offer His Son as a sacrifice to save a lost and broken world. This selfless, and redemptive love sets the highest standard.
And even more than that, God’s love also secures us. Revel in this:
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38–39)
This month, as we reflect more on love, let’s remember how deeply and securely we are loved by God. Let His love be our motivation, shaping our words and actions. As we express this love, may others see it in us and come to know that His love truly is the greatest thing in the world.
