Read Psalm 18:31–33, 35
The Cave of Adullam was no Holiday Inn Express.
It was a wicked refugee camp...a dark vault on the side of a cliff that reached deeply into a hill. Huddled in this clammy cavern were six hundred outcasts—a mob of desperate down-and-outers. They came from all over and wound up huddled in the makeshift shelter, naturally carved in the side of a cliff.
Among this rowdy bunch was one who lived as an exception to all their badness. David. It became his responsibility to turn that mob into an organized, well-disciplined fighting force...mighty men of valour...who would protect and defend the name of God in a broken and weary land. As David taught them the skills necessary for hand-to-hand combat in the rugged Judean wilderness, he also instructed them in the ways and precepts of God. I wonder what those misfits must have thought when their fearless leader broke into song and proclaimed,
Who is God except the LORD? Who but our God is a solid rock? God arms me with strength, and he makes my way perfect. He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights.... You have given me your shield of victory. Your right hand supports me; your help has made me great. (Psalm 18:31–33, 35)
Do those closest to you, huddled in the cave of your circumstances, hear you singing songs of confidence in the power and provision of God? Or do they only hear repeated refrains of worry, fear, and distress? Take time today to allow the Lord to retune your heart to sing in harmony with His. To sing as David sang of the faithfulness and help God provides. Be ready! You just might hear your cave-dwellers singing along with you.
