For such a time as this

Dear friend,

“Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep.” (Acts 13:36 NIV)

This statement about King David was not only true of him, but also of the heroes of faith mentioned in Hebrews 11 and found throughout the Bible. Abel, Noah, Abraham, Moses—I could go on—served God’s purpose in their generation, and then died.

It’s also true down through church history. Think of the Apostles, Augustine, Wycliffe, Luther, Calvin, Wesley, Spurgeon and many, many more. They all served God’s purpose in their generation, and then died.

I think of it this way. God is the great playwright and in eternity past He wrote an epic drama we now call history. It encompasses every person of every generation and it’s playing out in real time. It’s the ultimate reality drama about His purpose to redeem sinful humanity and restore all things through His Son, Jesus Christ.

“And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth.” (Ephesians 1:10)

Shakespeare wrote, “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances....” It’s true. We all have our part to play as we appear on redemption history’s stage. And then we exit.

Like the multitude of believers before us, you and I serve God in our generation—not in our parents’ generation, and not in our children’s or our grandchildren’s generation. Our time on redemptive history’s stage is now. It’s show time for us now!

It is no accident that we are on life’s stage at this juncture in history. I believe it was scripted by God the great playwright and, like queen Esther, you and I are where we are in history for “such a time as this” (Esther 4:14).

As part of fulfilling His purposes God has tasked us as Christians with sharing the Gospel and living as witnesses to the truth of God’s Word in our generation. He has also raised up Pastor Charles Swindoll to be an effective communicator of biblical truth and make a difference in many lives in this generation through Insight for Living Canada.

Is one of God’s purposes for you to serve Him in this generation by prayerfully and financially supporting the teaching of God’s Word through Pastor Chuck and Insight for Living Canada?

We all have a significant role to play in furthering God’s plan in our day. Can I count on you to play a part in helping provide financial resources for this important task?

As I think of serving God’s purposes in our generation I’m reminded of the words to the song, Find us Faithful, sung by Keith Green.

We're pilgrims on the journey of the narrow road,
And those who've gone before us line the way.
Cheering on the faithful, encouraging the weary,
Their lives a stirring testament to God's sustaining grace.
O may all who come behind us find us faithful,
May the fire of our devotion light their way.
May the footprints that we leave, lead them to believe,
And the lives we live inspire them to obey.
O may all who come behind us find us faithful.

My hope is that when the great cloud of believers past and future look at our era and the part we played they will say we were faithful—that we too served God’s purposes in our generation.
